Resistance

A set of organized actions by a society or human group to preserve and sustain their identity, sovereignty, and existence against an aggressive invader or occupier who intends to colonize or destroy you, and has blocked all peaceful and legal avenues of interaction.

Sumud (Steadfastness)

The intersection of resistance and endurance. Outward action against domination (resistance) combined with inner persistence in identity and the right to exist (endurance). As Palestinian activists have said: “Remaining on your land, even if they force you to leave.” Sumud means an active and conscious choice to struggle, with the aim: “You fight to stay, and you stay as if you have fought.”

Resistance Groups

Mainstream political discourse identifies the most famous resistance groups as a network of groups and states including Iran, Hezbollah in Lebanon, Palestinian fighters, Ansarallah (Houthis) in Yemen, and Iraqi groups, standing against American hegemony and the Zionist regime in West Asia. However, the term “resistance” is not limited to this geography. The logic governing resistance (standing against oppressive invaders and dominators) has global dimensions and includes non-military and peaceful movements worldwide. Thus, civil resistance and popular movements exist in Sudan (against war, violence, and apartheid), the Philippines, Pakistan, Chile, Kenya, and countries in Latin America and Africa.

Sumud stands against

Jewish and Christian Zionism embodied in the Israeli regime, American imperialism, apartheid regimes, neo-colonialism, dependent and puppet political systems, takfiri-terrorist currents aligned with domination, mainstream Western media, influential international institutions, power-dependent intellectuals who theorize the acceptance of oppression, and some religious institutions aligned with the oppressor (which declare resistance un-Islamic), as well as global capitalism and hegemonic economic institutions (IMF, World Bank, unilateral sanctions), and any current that portrays oppression as logical, normal, or inevitable.

Sumud Magazine

is a strategic journal for global resistance. The subject of this publication is resistance and endurance in their various dimensions against oppression and the oppressor, based on the logic of Sumud, even if the media portrays this logic as irrational or un-Islamic. The magazine’s goal is to move toward the theoretical formulation and discourse analysis of the space of Sumud and global resistance. We aim, with the help of all independent thinkers, to discover, introduce, and develop the culture of Sumud in its epistemological, philosophical, cognitive, intellectual, political, cultural, economic, spiritual, and faith-based dimensions across all human societies.

A message from Sumud Journal editor-in-chief

This publication is committed to examining the concept of Sumud as a multidimensional framework of resistance, endurance, and dignity. Through diverse perspectives, we aim to critically engage with systems of power and oppression while highlighting intellectual, cultural, and social forms of resilience. Our goal is to contribute to a deeper, more reflective global discourse on justice and collective human steadfastness.
